Fauchon - Fabulous French Food

Fauchon really needs no introduction. In the summer of 1995, little me (and my family) wandered into the Madeline outpost of Fauchon on a hot summer's day in Paris. I distinctly remember a large staircase, bright pink neon lights, and a sea of waiters dashing in and out of the dining room. The steak I had for lunch that day was marvelous. The fact that I still remember that, astounding. Fast forward 9 years later, I walk in to find that everything as changed. (Duh, new decade, what was I thinking!) The wonderful subterranean cafe transformed into large retail section. The cafe was downsized and moved to the first floor. The menu? A complete overhaul! I was crushed.

Fast forward 9 more years later we arrive at 2013. The year I took these photos. (I know I'm late. Oops.) The menu is more or less consistent these days and the delicacies of this fine french establishment has found its way closer to home. Last December I found myself in Abu Dhabi, where I had a sampling of their new menu. The savories were alright. A very satisfying lunch. But what I particularly enjoy chez Fauchon is the chocolate ganache tart. Every single time, without fault, I'd end a meal with that. Or just have it with my coffee/tea over an afternoon chat with a visiting family member. The vanilla millefeuille deserves a special mention. Ultimately, Fauchon is a great global example of delicious French products, chocolates, jams, and perfectly cooked steaks of a bygone era.

Le Maschou - A Rosy Affaire

Dining at Le Maschou is practically a must when you're in Cannes. Apparently I've been here before when I was a wee little child; but I obviously do not recall. Now I remember very well what awaits at Le Maschou.

It's a set menu unlike you've ever seen before! They start with a delightful cheese spread that you're supposed to spread on toast...but I could've easily spread it on anything and eaten it. So good!

Next course is a gigantor basket of vegetables that awakens the vegetarian in any carnivore. Ah but then come the grills. You have the choice of beef, lamb or chicken. Whatever you choose it'll be the most memorable spit roast meat you'll probably ever have. My beef was well seasoned and on point.

Do not skip dessert. I repeat do not skip it!! The chocolate mousse is easily the best I've had in recent memory.

Oh and for the ladies, a rose to end the meal. So if you see ladies smiling and walking down rue Saint Antoine with a rose in hand, know that they've had an excellent meal at Le Maschou.

Le Girelier - Not Worth It

Can't really recommend this place based on the service. If you're looking for a tourist trap with waiters that think they own the yachts outside on the port, then step right in.

Le Girelier's strong point and downfall is that they're a service 'non-stop' type of place. Which means they're open for lunch and dinner and that time in between. Arab time. And that's when we went, obvs. But the vibe was totally off. The head waiter was having a rough day and so we had a rough experience.

This was the first time I've ever been at a French restaurant where the entree and the main dish arrived simultaneously. The absolute horror! The disgrace of it all! My poor brother clawed his escargots out of their shell only to follow it up with a tepid 60€ bouillabaisse! And my sister received her main dish after we've all finished ours! It's a crime I tell you!!

I however had a pleasant al dente pasta. The interesting thing about the dish is its called "al dente spaghetti" with tomato, so if they over cook the pasta...then that's not the correct dish. But thankfully the kitchen were on point, even if the staff in the restaurant were frazzled and bored. Yes bored.

I can assure you that Mr. Hon Hon Hon got a measly tip! Never again!
